PORTRAIT
Drawing people is my first love in art and where I experienced my initial success as an artist. It was at Howard University where I developed my understanding of the beauty and mystery of the human figure and honed my skills to render the likeness of subjects. My desire to depict impactful and inspirational people throughout the African Diaspora is based on my love of history and those who make it. Through portraiture, I seek to explore the journey of my subjects through their adversity and triumphs.
Reflection on my work to date, has made me aware of the intersection and similarities between my depiction of structures and humans. Rendering historical and contemporary figures is no different for me than rendering the most significant monuments and bridges. Most, if not all, of my human subjects, like bridges, have connected world communities and provided the strong foundation and anchorage for others to walk across and achieve their dreams.
